How do we use Ultrasound Guided Injections at Uxbridge Physiotherapy?
Your injection appointment will include a Clinical Assessment, Diagnostic Ultrasound Scan and Ultrasound Guided Injection, providing a prompt one-stop appointment to manage your pain. Your clinician will be a highly experienced Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist who is qualified to prescribe medicine and holds a qualification in Diagnostic Ultrasound.
What to expect in during your appointment:
- A thorough Clinical Assessment of your problem to generate a working diagnosis.
- Diagnostic Ultrasound Scan to confirm and increase confidence in this diagnosis.
- Assessment and discussion of the findings, benefits, risks and treatment options with the option to change your mind if you wish (you would only be charged for the assessment and scan in this case).
- Assuming there is no medical reason not to, we will perform an Ultrasound Guided Injection. This method allows us to visualise the needle into the target structure, ensuring maximum precision and effectiveness, whilst minimising risks and complications.
When should I consider a painkilling steroid injection?
- A course of physiotherapy is not improving pain and symptoms.
- Pain continues to significantly affect your daily life, sleep and function.
- Painkillers as directed by your doctor are having little effect.
What medications do you inject?
A standard ‘steroid injection’ will include a corticosteroid – a class of anti-inflammatory medications e.g. depomedrone, triamcinolone, mixed with a local anaesthetic – Lidocaine or Bupivicaine (a short-term numbing agent).
Whilst corticosteroids, an anti-inflammatory medication, are most commonly injected for pain relief, other medications can also be injected including Durolane
Why do you do Ultrasound Guided Injections?
At Uxbridge Physiotherapy we insist on an Ultrasound Guided Injection over a Landmark or Unguided Injection to ensure accuracy of needle placement. By using an Ultrasound Scanner we can track the needle location after it had been inserted into the skin to the target structure, watching the ‘steroid’ as it is injected.
What conditions don’t we inject?
We don’t inject spinal pain or head and neck pain.
When is it NOT appropriate to have an Ultrasound Guided Injection?
There are some situations when a steroid injection is not appropriate e.g:
- If you are pregnant
- If you have an infection
- If you have a known allergy to local anaesthetics or corticosteroids
In other situations written consent from your GP may be required may be required before continuing with an injection e.g.
- Unstable diabetes
- Unstable blood pressure
Your Physiotherapist will advise you if Steroid Injections are not appropriate, or whether further medical advice should be sought after fully assessing your condition. For further information please see our Steroid Injection Information Leaflet .
Will the injection hurt?
Ultrasound Guided Injections can be a little uncomfortable when performed but are generally well-tolerated by patients.
Can Steroid Injections be repeated?
Steroid injections can be repeated but would usually need at least 6 weeks between injections into the same area. Generally not more than 3 injections are carried in the same area in a year. Decisions will be made jointly with your clinician after discussion, and consideration of the potential benefits and side effects of the procedure, on a case-by-case basis.
If you have any questions or are unsure whether a Steroid Injection is appropriate for you please call us on 01895 717535 or email us on [email protected] and a physiotherapist qualified in ultrasound scanning and injection will call you back to discuss this with you.
